Israel does not fear the kite; it fears a child from Gaza smiling and playing with his kite above the skies of his homeland.
For the children of Gaza, a kite is not a weapon. It is a simple symbol of childhood, freedom, and a moment of joy in a place where war has stolen almost everything from them. Yet even this small act of innocence has been portrayed as a threat.
According to Hebrew Live, retired Major General Uzi Dayan said:
«“Every place from which kites are launched from Gaza should be bombed, even if it is inside a civilian residential neighborhood. Gaza should look like Berlin in 1945, and then we can talk about the day after.”»
These words are horrifying because they speak not about military targets alone, but about bombing places even when they are inside civilian neighborhoods—and invoke the destruction of Berlin in 1945 as a model.
Behind every neighborhood are families. Behind every window is a child. Behind every destroyed home are parents who simply wanted their children to survive.
A child should never have to wonder whether flying a kite could make them a target. Children should be allowed to laugh, play, dream, and grow up without the sound of bombs defining their childhood.
Gaza’s children deserve more than survival. They deserve safety, dignity, education, food, and the right to simply be children.
And while the world watches, families continue to struggle to survive amid displacement, hunger, destruction, and the loss of everything they once called home.
